A top bowler and batsman in Cup Match history, Symonds exemplified leadership and skill on the cricket field. However, his prowess extended beyond cricket; he was also a talented footballer, becoming the second Bermudian to play in England.
In football, Symonds played as a striker for Rochdale, primarily with their reserve side. His experience in England proved beneficial for his cricket career as well. Symonds received valuable coaching from two Indian professionals with Rochdale's cricket team, enhancing his bowling and batting techniques. He even managed to play one game with Rochdale's B side, scoring an impressive 60 runs.
Locally, Symonds played for Key West Rangers, which later amalgamated with PHC. During his time, the team achieved an impressive record of 76 wins, 6 draws, and 13 losses. Despite the challenges of segregation, Symonds believed that integration could have strengthened local clubs further.
Symonds' cricket journey began with Western Stars, where his talent was evident from a young age. His first invitation to play was met with resistance due to his age, but he soon proved his worth by scoring 118 not out in a friendly match against Young Men's Social Club. This early experience fueled his determination and resilience.
Symonds made his Cup Match debut at the age of 18 in 1950. Under the mentorship of Clarence Smith, Leroy Richardson, Carleton Welch, and Clarence Simmons, he learned the qualities of effective leadership. Symonds emphasized toughness and the importance of demanding excellence from his players.
Taking over the captaincy in 1961, Symonds led St. George's through what could be considered the best era in Cup Match history. His team achieved numerous victories, including 10-wicket wins and innings victories. Symonds enforced strict rules, ensuring that even the most talented players attended training or risked not being selected. This disciplined approach contributed to the team's success.
Symonds' most memorable victory came in 1964 when St. George's needed 50 runs in 30 minutes to win the cup. He strategically opened with aggressive batsmen Lloyd James and Rupert Scotland and went in at number 3, leading the team to a thrilling victory.
